Built on eight years of research.
The MASS Standard’s development started at the Humanity 2.0 Lab, founded at the Vatican in partnership with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. After 8 years of R&D with 96 experts involved, it was first validated with FC Mother in Brazil and is now expanding across the world’s largest fandoms. MASS is being released as an open draft, so others can help shape the future of Fandom Health™.
The lab, and how MASS got here.
2015 · Mobilized America’s Mayors
Led the first resolution on mothers’ health in 83 years at the U.S. Conference of Mayors, signed by 1,300 mayors. It became the policy foundation for the Humanity 2.0 Lab and for MASS.
Founded the Laboratory
Established the scientific foundation for MASS through the Humanity 2.0 Lab and began work on mobilizing behavior change through fandom.
Convened Global Expertise
Convened 96 interdisciplinary experts spanning medicine, behavioral science, public health, technology, sport and data science to contribute to the scientific foundation of MASS.
Defined the Grand Challenges
Through the Humanity 2.0 Lab with Harvard at the Vatican, researchers synthesized global burden of disease data and environmental health research to identify the societal challenges where mobilizing behavior change could generate the greatest improvement in human health and longevity. This work established the first scientific applications for MASS: maternal health, loneliness, childhood obesity, mental health and chronic disease.
Foundational Validation
Validated MASS in its first real-world implementation, with FC Mother in Brazil: mothers’ teams of family, friends and fans, every Assist confirmed by the mother who received it.
Cross-Network Validation Now
MASS now expands into the world’s largest fandom environments: gaming, football, esports, entertainment and culture. The objective is to validate MASS as a universal scientific standard capable of mobilizing behavior change across multiple fandom environments.
Global Standardization Next
Future work will expand MASS through a global contributor council, independent scientific governance, cross-sector validation, global benchmarking, certification, AI-enabled prediction and new societal applications. As the evidence base grows, the weightings behind the Standard are recalibrated on observed outcomes, so each version of MASS is derived from what the last one produced.
A global ecosystem.
MASS emerged from a first-of-its-kind global ecosystem unified by Square Roots across health, science, capital, impact, data, policy and football.
